He’s Walking!

Big news, straight from the little squirt himself: the boy can walk! It might be only 5-6 steps, and he may still prefer crawling, but he certainly is enjoying the encouragement we give when he walks a distance. It happened mostly yesterday while we were picnicking on Parliament Hill when he decided ‘hey, I can not only stand, but I can walk too!’ I got some photos of him doing just that (they may not be great..). So far, he has been starting by holding my hand to get up and going, then he drops my hand and goes on his own. It’s been quite the excitement for us! I think I feel ready for him to walk. I felt unready for him to crawl, and now that I’ve gotten over that, I feel more prepared this time mentally for this. I will miss him crawling and speeding off at great speed on his hands and knees (which has been very cute), but this is an exciting adventure for sure.

He is pushing another tooth through on the bottom right side as well. I only found the little white nub when he was crying really hard after hitting his face on something or other. He hasn’t shown any signs of discomfort from it yet, but I’m glad I know it’s there for when that does happen. It saves me becoming frustrated trying to figure out what’s wrong.

Please forgive the lack of his walking photos – our site apparently thinks those are the ones that deserve to be denied being uploaded. Working on fixing the problem. If you’re on facebook, you might be able to see them there.

There’s a small blue dot in the distance of this picture – that’s how far he crawled in less than a minute.

A majority Conservative government?! Noooooooo!!!!

Just Another Thursday

I’ll start by sharing two of my recipes that I’m using for Easter season:

Mondays, week 1

Spaghetti & Meatballs (Meatballs taken from Baby Love by Norah O’Donnell)

1/2 lb ground beef
1/2 lb ground veal
1/2 lb ground pork
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1/4 cup yellow onion, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup parmesan, grated
1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
2 oz olive oil
– Mix first 9 ingredients together in a bowl
– Make meatballs (whatever size you want; I like miniature ones but the recipe says to use an ice cream scoop)
– Heat oil and cook meatballs, turning halfway through (about 15-20 minutes total)
– Alternatively, you can also use a cookie sheet and bake them, which is what I do
– While cooking meatballs, boil up some water and toss in the amount of pasta that will feed you.

– We typically use a canned tomato sauce; I’ve found the plainest kind works well with the flavour of the meatballs (i.e. not drowning that flavour out)

Tuesdays, week 1

Heavenly Hash (courtesy of Grandma Kirk, Andy’s grandmother)

1-1.5 lbs ground beef
chopped onion (I use 1-2 small onions)
6 slices bacon, chopped and fried
1 cup celery, chopped
1 can cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
1 can tomato soup, undiluted
1/2 can of mushrooms (or 4oz sliced mushrooms)
– Brown beef in a pan, add onion
– Add remaining ingredients and bring to boil
– Serve with cooked macaroni (though Andy swears by mashed potatoes)

– Alternatively, one could saute onions, mushrooms, and celery, add the beef and cook through, then add the remaining ingredients (this is what I do)
– Cook up some macaroni while it’s on the stove, and serve.

Awesome recipes! I might post recipes on Thursdays since I don’t seem to want to blog on Thursdays.

Other news: Spencer took another step yesterday! And he was practicing standing by himself this morning. I think he’s enjoying it, but extremely cautious, which seems unusual for him. Ah well, he’s still a cutie.

I think he has broken his beloved stroller. As you might be able to see in the photos, right where his legs should sit on the stroller seat, there are gaps. I think he separated the pieces of the seat while trying to get out of his stroller by standing on the foot rest and pulling himself up to standing with his bar. So now his seat has separated into three jagged-like pieces. He won’t sit with his legs down anymore (hence the photo). At least not willingly.

Looks like he just hanging from this angle

Yes, that is him licking his plate

Unfortunately, I think it was probably me who taught him this trick…
