Faith,  Liturgical Year

O Wisdom

Today is the start of the O Antiphons, which are nothing more or less than the antiphon for the liturgy of the hours, and often before the Gospel at daily Mass.

These seven antiphons preceding Christmas all start with “O”, hence their excruciatingly non-original names that they’re known by. They are beautiful (and very short) reflections of our remembrance of God coming into the world, of God in this world, and of God who is to come into the world.

They are some of my most favourite little reflections and prayers that occur in our liturgical year, and I’ve made a printable for each day for them, starting with today (sorry it’s a late start – family life was a bit crazy this morning). Tomorrow’s will be up much earlier. Just right-click and hit “save as” or it’s equivalent to save it to your desktop. You can print from there (card stock holds up well if you’re hanging it).

Happy last week of Advent! O Wisdom, come teach us! Decemebr 17 - site

Update:

Full text of the antiphons varies by interpretation. My Divine Office app reads it as such:

O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, you govern all creation with your strong yet tender care. Come and show your people the way to salvation.

Wikipedia interprets it like this:

O Wisdom, coming forth from the mouth of the Most High, reaching from one end to the other, mightily and sweetly ordering all things: Come and teach us the way of prudence.

Latin (found on wiki) reads:

O Sapientia, quae ex ore Altissimi prodiisti, attingens a fine usque ad finem, fortiter suaviterque disponens omnia: veni ad docendum nos viam prudentiae.

Loving God through my family, friends, and interactions in my world.
